Isla Caja de Muertos: The Ultimate Island Adventure in Ponce, Puerto Rico

Updated: Jan 17

If you’re looking for one of the most breathtaking island adventures in Puerto Rico, Isla Caja de Muertos needs to be at the top of your list.

Located just off the coast of Ponce, this protected island offers crystal-clear waters, white-sand beaches, incredible snorkeling, and views that feel untouched by time. I recently experienced it myself—and it exceeded every expectation.

In this post, I’ll share what makes Caja de Muertos so special and exactly how you can book the same adventure I did.

What Is Isla Caja de Muertos?

Isla Caja de Muertos is a small uninhabited island off the southern coast of Puerto Rico. Its name translates to “Coffin Island,” due to the island's shape resemblance of a coffin but don’t let that scare you—this place is anything but dark.

The island is a natural reserve, meaning its beaches and marine life remain beautifully preserved. Access is only possible by boat, which keeps the crowds manageable and maintains the authenticity of the experience.

My Experience Visiting Caja de Muertos

From the moment we boarded the boat in La Guancha in Ponce, I knew this was going to be special. We arrived at 8:15AM, and the boat departure time was 8:30 AM, We followed the Google maps link provided by the boat tour company, and it took us to the pier's parking lot.

The scenic ride was only 25 minutes, and arriving at the island was next level. The water was unbelievably clear, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The beach felt peaceful, spacious, and untouched—no resorts, no noise, just nature. Once we arrived, the Captain provided us with some insights about the island, a quick safety briefing, and off we went to explore.

🎥 I shared the full experience in my video on my SM platforms: FB, IG and Tik Tok—make sure to check it out.

Why You Should Book This Adventure:

  • 🌴 Pristine, uncrowded beaches

  • 🤿 Excellent snorkeling conditions

  • 🚤 Smooth, well-organized boat tour

  • 📸 Incredible photo & video opportunities

  • 🇵🇷 One of Puerto Rico’s true hidden gems

We explored first, and then off to snorkeling the crystal clear waters. We swam to the pier and that's where we found all of the fish, just chilling- It was beautiful. Then we took a break for lunch, the tour includes a sandwich from a local bakery or you have the option of bringing your own snacks.

How to Book the Caja de Muertos Tour

I booked my trip through a trusted local tour operator, and the process was simple and stress-free.,

If you are looking for a more private and intimate experience,

Spots are limited and tours sell out quickly—especially during peak travel seasons—so I recommend booking in advance.

Important Tips Before You Go:

  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, a towel, plenty of water, and snacks.

  • Wear comfortable water shoes to explore.

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early for check-in. The boat will depart on time!

  • Don’t forget your camera and bring a waterproof phone pouch.

Final Thoughts

Isla Caja de Muertos is one of those places that stays with you long after you leave. If you’re visiting Puerto Rico and want an experience beyond the usual tourist spots, this is it.
